Bonus Post: REVIEW of Behind the Curtain open-mic event

Behind the Curtain, Dec. 10th

Write a short review (200-300 words) of the Spoken Word Poetry club's lunch hour open-mic event.  Unlike a typical review, however, you are asked to highlight only the positives of the performing poets.

Post your review (with name) on the class blog prior to the beginning of class on Monday, Dec. 14th.

  1. Behind the curtain was such an eye opening experience! Today was my first time at a spoken word performance, and I must say I was surprised at what it was like. For some reason I had this idea in my head that spoken word was a predominantly a girl thing (sorry... I know that is terrible) but I was so happy to see so many guys there performing very strong pieces! I was also happy to see that there was a teacher there- hopefully there can be more next time. All the people there were very creative writers and confident speakers, and I really just wished I could clap instead of snap because I'm not very good at snapping (??) It was a fun experience though, and i'm excited to maybe try performing next time!!

    1. The male to female ratio is oddly equal, especially in Spoken Word Club itself.

Also, you definitely should perform next time. :)

  2. The Behind the Curtain event held behind the curtain(hehe) on Thursday was a pleasant experience, both as a performer and as a member of the audience. The entire event felt generally casual, which was easy on the nerves making performing much easier. It was also nice to see a decent turnout for a cult event(not a bad thing) such as this one. In terms of the poets/poems, all of it was really well performed. The few slip-ups were barely noticeable, and the pieces themselves were fantastic.

    This has been my review.
    Sincerely,
    Me(Matt)

P.S. Reviews that include negatives are far better and more productive than reviews that are only allowed to include positives.

  3. Being this was my first spoken word event I was amazed that Behind the Curtain was such a refreshing variety of great stories and/or moral lessons that resonate deeply within the audience so that we can never get the powerful words out of our heads. Voices that tore across the room no matter how loud their tones were, sending the audience into a trance of captivated beauty, flowing in the form of words off of the lips of the performers. From the desperation of trying to get more people to drink water to the heartbreaking reality of a schizophrenic’s unreality, words were given absolute life with conviction and determination. The MC spoke with an air of confidence I completely envy and the performance had already begun the moment he uttered the first word. If only the performances went on all day, continuing to give me chills and to make me contemplate ideas I had never considered before. The importance of the subjects performed is deeply impersonated by the tone and expressions of the performers, allowing the audience to follow along with the right feel of the touched subjects. The empty seats were just a mild reminder that the audience were a special few able to experience worthy of the ears of thousands.
